The Bakersfield Fire Department is encouraging the public to participate in the Great Shake Out Drill of 2016 at 10:20 a.m. on Thursday.

The goal of the drill is to help people prepare for and survive an earthquake, firefighters said.

Recommendations include the following:

• Strap furniture to walls, put latches on cabinets and secure heavy items including TVs and computers.

• Create or update emergency plans, including designating a place to meet afterward. Plan for a three-day supply of drinking water. A gallon per day per person is recommended.

• Organize food and supplies for three days. Non-perishable food, medicine, batteries, flashlights, a radio and fire extinguisher should be kept at home.
