Along with chips and salsa and platters of chicken wings, Super Bowl Sunday is also synonymous, for many, with knocking back a couple beers as they cheer on their team.

Unfortunately, several in the Bakersfield area drank to excess then got behind the wheel, according to Bakersfield police.

Law enforcement arrested 18 motorists on suspicion of DUI on Sunday, according to the Bakersfield Police Department and the California Highway Patrol. Each agency made nine arrests.

BPD spokesman Sgt. Ryan Kroeker said their arrests marked the highest total for the big game in the past three years; officers made five DUI arrests on Super Bowl Sunday in 2017, and four in 2016.

Additionally, police arrested three people on domestic violence charges, Kroeker said. There were also three arrests on those charges during last year's game, and six in 2016.
