Eight drivers were detained for further evaluation of sobriety levels and four drivers were charged with driving under the influence, during a DUI/ Driver's License Checkpoint conducted by the BPD, said a BPD news release.

Between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. on Saturday, BPD screened 1316 vehicles in the 6900 block of Panama Lane, the release said.

24 drivers were cited for having no driver's license or driving on a suspended license, said the release.

BPD said in the release that the funding for this checkpoint is provided to the Bakersfield Police Department Traffic Section by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BPD encourages the public to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver, according to the release.
