A Shafter man has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after slamming into the back of a vehicle on 7th Standard Road Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Emilio Tellez, 23, was treated for minor injuries then booked into the downtown jail, according to the CHP.
The driver of the other vehicle, identified by officers as Refugio J. Aarreola, 54, of Shafter, suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Kern Medical Center. Aarreola's pickup was stopped on the road due to one-way traffic control for construction.
"Due to the level of intoxication from Mr. Tellez, he failed to notice Mr. Aarreola's stopped vehicle and slammed into the back of it," officers said in a news release.
The crash occurred around 9 a.m. on 7th Standard Road at Broken Court, east of Enos Lane.
