A carjacking suspect was taken into custody after a Kern County Sheriff's Office helicopter spotted him entering a garage in east Bakersfield.
Police surrounded the residence and the suspect, a male juvenile, surrendered after several minutes. A firearm and stolen property were recovered from the garage, according to police.
The events leading to the arrest began at about 11:35 p.m. Wednesday when police were dispatched to a carjacking with a gun in the area of Panorama and Loma Linda drives. Officers spoke with two victims who said a suspect approached them, brandished a gun and demanded personal property and the keys to the victims' red 2018 Hyundai Sonata, police said.
The sheriff's helicopter spotted the vehicle in the area of Haley Street and Highway 178, police said, and the suspect abandoned the vehicle near Haley and Cunha Street and ran. The helicopter's spotlight caught him entering a garage in nearby Bower Street.
The residence was evacuated and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident, police said. He was booked on suspicion of carjacking, robbery and other offenses.
