A man was killed on Tuesday after he lost control of his vehicle and it plunged into the river in the Kern River canyon near Highway 178, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP said at around 12:37 p.m., it was notified of a vehicle found in the canyon. Officers found a 25-year-old man in the vehicle, a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The department said it is believed the man lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn down an embankment and drop 150 feet.

The CHP said it’s not clear if alcohol or drugs factored into the accident, which is still under investigation.
