A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of any suspects responsible for the murder of Marcos Vargas, a young lawyer who many described as a rising star.

Vargas was found with major injuries and pronounced dead at about 3:15 a.m. Nov. 29 at his apartment complex in the 600 block of Hosking Avenue.

A licensed attorney in Mexico, Vargas came to Kern County after passing the bar exam in the United States and went to work for Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance in June 2016, initially working in the Community Homeless Law Center to find housing for those experiencing homelessness, said Estella Casas, executive director of GBLA.

Later, he took part in the Immigration Justice Collaborative, offering legal services to those at risk of being deported.

“Not only was he an excellent attorney with an enormous amount of potential for giving to the clients that he served, but as someone who moved here, he immersed into our community and did an enormous amount of volunteer work for the most vulnerable communities,” Casas said.

The reward comes from an anonymous donation made Thursday.

Anyone with information should call the Secret Witness Hotline at 661-322-4040, Detective James Jones, 661-326-3555, or Bakersfield Police Department at 661-327-7111.
