The Kern County Sheriff's Office is warning the public about a possible phone scam in which someone solicits people for personal information after telling them they missed jury duty.

Michael Alvarado, 49, died of blunt force injuries as a result of a traffic accident on Highway 223 on Feb. 13, and it was an accident, according to the coroner's office.

Sixty people were evacuated and nearby roads shut down about 2 p.m. Sunday after the Kern County Fire Department found a gas leak near an apartment complex in the 200 block of West Tulare Avenue in Shafter.

Two people were arrested and third suspect is being sought in connection with the shooting death of a man Saturday night in the 1800 block of Union Avenue, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

The Frazier Park and Pine Mountain Club areas were hit hard by Friday's storm, the Kern County Fire Department said in a news release.

Authorities are investigating the death of a 1 1/2-year-old boy in Wasco and have taken two other children living in the boy's home into protective custody. 

A Bakersfield man whose body was found Thursday at Breckenridge Road just east of Pepper Drive had been shot, according to coroner's officials. 

A 5-year-old girl was killed in an alleged DUI crash Wednesday when the car she was traveling in veered into oncoming traffic and collided with a Ford F-750 dump truck in the Mojave area.
