Glenn Darell Wieland was arraigned on felony charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and causing bodily injury and possession of a controlled substance in Kern Superior Court in Shafter. Wieland's bail was sent $250,000.

The California Highway Patrol arrested Glenn D. Wieland, 52, of Lancaster on felony charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and causing bodily injury and possession of a controlled substance, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s office Web site.

Wieland was also being held on two misdemeanor charges, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Wieland was driving a 1994 Ford pickup west on Stockdale Highway, about two miles west of Highway 43, just after midnight Saturday when his truck crossed the yellow line and struck an eastbound Kia driven by Jennifer Jones, 32, of Bakersfield, according to the CHP. Jones suffered minor injuries.

Wieland’s truck continued in the wrong lane, slamming head-on into a 2000 Oldsmobile, according to the CHP. Timothy Wayne Retes, 22, and Trisha Sheree Walton, 27, both of Bakersfield, died in the accident.

Passengers Rick Flynn, 36 and an unidentified 4-year-old, as well as Wieland, were flown to Kern Medical Center with major injuries, the CHP said.

Flynn was listed in fair condition at KMC Sunday. No updates were available on the child.

Wieland’s bail was set at $224,000, the Sheriff’s Web site states.
