Lonnie Ellis, Jr., of Merced, was walking west while crossing the southbound lanes of Highway 99, south of Peterson Road, at about 5:47 p.m. At that time, Shaminder Singh Grewal, 43 of Yuba City, was driving south in the No. 3 lane at 55 mph.

Grewal pushed the brakes to his tractor and turned to avoid Ellis, but the truck, with a refrigerated trailer attached, hit Ellis, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He was pushed to the dirt shoulder on the side of the road where he lay. He died of his injuries at the scene.
