Kim Sickles was driving her 2006 Mercury Mountaineer at 4:10 a.m. westbound on Highway 178 near Elizabeth Norris Road. She drove off of the right shoulder for unknown reasons as the road curved. Sickles overcorrected to the left and crossed all four lanes of the highway, rolling over a several times.
She suffered major head injuries, and was unconscious when she was airlifted to Kern Medical Center, California Highway Patrol officials said. High speed or alcohol do not appear to be a factor. She was wearing a seat belt.
