Police say the gunman appeared to know the victim, Juan Ponce, who was standing in the front yard of a home at 826 Lomita Drive, near Belle Terrace.

The shooter, who was driving a red, 4-door compact car with paper license plates, started talking to several people in the front yard around 8:45 p.m., said Sgt. Craig Rennie with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.

The gunman coaxed Ponce to the car and fired several shots at him. Ponce later died at Kern Medical Center.

Several residents declined to discuss the shooting early Saturday afternoon. A woman sitting with children in front of the home where Ponce was shot said she and others at the residence were involved in the case and didn’t want to talk, adding “it’s personal.”

The suspect remained at large Friday night. Anyone with information on the shooting should call the Sheriff’s Department at 861-3110.
