Bakersfield’s population rose to 328,692, a 1.8 percent gain on last year, according to estimates by the state Department of Finance.
On the ladder of California cities, that leaves us 18,131 people shy of No. 10 Anaheim and 24,492 short of No. 9 Santa Ana.
But since Bakersfield historically has grown faster than other cities, we should vault into California’s top 10 in two to three years, predicted Bakersfield City Manager Alan Tandy.
Santa Ana grew just 0.4 percent, and Anaheim 0.8 percent.
No city is likely to catch up to Bakersfield soon, either. Number 12 Riverside also could only keep pace with Bakersfield at 1.8 percent growth.
The population includes only the city limits, not unincorporated areas around the city or in county pockets.
Kern County grew 2.1 percent to 817,517 people.
The fastest-growing city in the county is California City, which grew 9.6 percent to 14,365 residents. The only city to lose population was Maricopa, which dropped by two people to 1,132.
The estimates are as of Jan. 1, 2008.
