Equal to about 51 full-time spots, the move, along with unfilled vacancies, will save about $1.8 million, said Dennis Scott, associate superintendent of business.
KHSD recently issued pink slips to 23 teachers. The district has eliminated $16.7 million from next year’s budget including staff and program reductions, and retirements, Scott said.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in January proposed 10 percent cuts to state programs, including $4.8 billion to education.
Also, Trustee Ken Mettler proposed the district recommend to its vendors that they use a Web-based system to verify employees’ Social Security numbers. The board will vote at the May meeting.
His original proposal recommended the program for KHSD but Mettler had not realized the district had a program in place, he said.
The board also agreed to send letters of support for two bills authored by Assemblywoman Jean Fuller, R-Bakersfield.
One could extend teachers’ probationary period up to four years from two. Another would allow schools to recommend to the Department of Motor Vehicles to yank driver’s licenses for habitually truant students.
