The bear's head was likely clipped by a car or truck. A small chunk of a bumper was a few feet from the animal.
Had the motorist hit the bear head on, "it would be like hitting a brick wall," California Highway Patrol Officer Bob Main said.
Main was waiting for state Department of Transportation workers to remove the carcass. The officer thought the bear weighed about 400 pounds.
