Carol Ann Gutierrez, 44, died at the scene of the crash on Akers Road at Panama Lane, a Kern County coroner’s office news release said.
The collision happened at 8:18 a.m. when an SUV traveling south on Akers Road smashed into Gutierrez’s car near Panama Lane and overturned, Bakersfield police Sgt. Greg Terry said. Two pickups were also hit.
The car was destroyed and the two pickups sustained minor damage. The driver of the SUV, who police identified as Richard Anthony Alonzo, 26, ran from his vehicle.
Alonzo was described as Hispanic with dark hair, dark pants and a dark sweatshirt or sweater with white lettering, Terry said. He may be suffering from an injury over his eyes. He is wanted on a warrant for felony hit and run involving severe injury or death and vehicular manslaughter.
The driver of one of the pickups was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Terry said the pickup drivers were interviewed and officers from the BPD’s traffic division were reconstructing the crash.
Chunks of metal, glass and other debris from the smashed vehicles lay in the street. The car was damaged enough that Terry couldn’t tell what type of model it was.
The SUV was on its left side in the roadway about 10 a.m. A white sneaker was lying near the back of the vehicle.
An officer was directing traffic at the intersection and vehicles were only allowed eastbound on Panama Lane for a while.
It’s unknown why the SUV’s driver ran from the scene. Terry said a driver who leaves the scene of a crash that resulted in injuries faces felony charges.
