The 38-year-old and his wife, Kim, made the trip on Saturday to see her, said Jan Hillenbrand, one of Kim's best friends.

"We're so blessed we saw them," she said Friday on her way back to Randsburg to comfort Kim.

She described Blackwell's death as a shock.

"When you have someone who's been sick or somebody older, you can kind of sit around and remember and joke, but I can't think of a funny thing in the world right now," she said.

Randsburg resident Randy Halgunseth described Blackwell as a tall, handsome man who road his motorcycle to and from work every day.

"If you'd have put head shots in, you could have put him in the movies," Halgunseth said.

On Friday, Halgunseth recalled Blackwell proposing to Kim with a bannerstrung across Butte Street in Randsburg.

Kim Blackwell could not be reached for comment.

Blackwell's father said he was too distraught to talk about his son on Friday.

"We don't even know what's going on," he said over the phone. "All I know is that he's dead, that he was killed in an explosion."
