Wells is a native of Buffalo, New York, but has lived most of his life in California growing up on the Central Coast. He graduated in 1978 from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in journalism and a concentration in advertising/public relations. In 1981, he received his MBA in management from Golden Gate University of San Francisco.
Wells, a 17-year veteran at The Californian oversees the Advertising Sales, Newspaper Marketing, and bakersfield.com.
His work background includes stints in restaurant management, title insurance and more than 25 years in the newspaper industry. He has worked at newspapers in Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Napa Valley and Corona, California.
At The Californian he has held the positions of retail sales supervisor, retail advertising manager, director of sales and marketing and was named Vice President of Sales & Strategic Initiatives in 1998.
Local community involvement includes, President of Bakersfield West Rotary; Vice Chair of Kern Economic Development Corporation; Board of Director with the Greater Bakersfield Visitor and Convention Bureau; previous involvement with Greater Bakersfield Visitors and Convention Bureau, Link to Life, st. Francis School Foundation, Downtown Business Association and Junior Achievement. Wells is a two-term past president of the Californian Newspaper Advertising Executives Association.
Wells and his wife, Karen, have three sons.
