Howard Owens has worked in the newspaper industry for most of the past 20 years. He's been a reporter, editor and publisher and worked in sales.
As a writer he won regional journalism awards for deadline news, feature writing, legal coverage, editorial writing and page composition. A San
Diego-native, he attended Point Loma Nazarene College, where he was editor of the student newspaper. Prior to college, Owens served four years
in the USAF.
Before moving to Bakersfield, Owens was director of new media for the Ventura County Star. VenturaCountyStar.com was awarded the General
Excellence award from the Online News Association in 2004. The Star's site also won awards from the Newspaper Association of America, Editor &
Publisher and the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
Owens met his wife, Billie Faye, when they were both reporters at a 25,000-circulation daily in El Cajon, Calif. They married in 1993.
