Reared in Claremont, in eastern Los Angeles
County, Hardisty began her journalism career as a reporter and
editor for a chain of weekly newspapers in the Pomona and San
Gabriel valleys.
In 1974, she joined the staff of The Hanford
Sentinel, outside of Fresno, where she worked as a government
and military affairs reporter and was later promoted to city editor.
She joined the staff of The Bakersfield
Californian in 1981, serving as county government reporter until
her promotion to business editor in 1987. Two years later, she
was promoted to assistant managing editor in charge of local and
business news. She was promoted to editorial page editor in 1991.
She holds a bachelor of science degree
in communications from California State Polytechnic University,
Pomona, and has completed graduate journalism courses at Fresno
State University.
