The kids had a great time playing basketball in one of the bounce houses provided at the reunion of NICU babies and their caregivers Sunday at San Joaquin Community Hospital. An NICU is an intensive care unit that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of ill or premature infants.

The superhero theme was evident Sunday at a reunion of children who spent time in San Joaquin Community Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and their caregivers.

The hospital opened its nine-bed NICU within its Maternity Care Center five years ago. The NICU serves ill and premature babies.

But Sunday, it was all about celebrating the children, families and caregivers.

Photographer Rodney Thornburg shares these photos from the reunion.
