We're in state championship week for high school football in Bakersfield for the first time in 79 years. And it's for two teams. Crazy stuff — and really cool stuff for a town that loves its football.
We're happy to bring it to you, of course. In fact, BVarsity is ramping up its coverage even more this week, with something on the bowl games in The Californian print edition every day this week. (You might have seen John Hornberg's terrific graphical display on the Bakersfield-Del Oro game in today's paper, and he's giving Bakersfield Christian-Central Catholic the same treatment for Tuesday's edition.) Then we'll roll out some features each day leading up to the big day on Friday.
Ah, yes, the big day ... Friday, we're rolling an RV into Carson, where we'll do a live pregame show — probably around 2 p.m., but time isn't set yet — from the StubHub Center parking lot. Then the live blog and fast and furious Twitter coverage will begin from inside the stadium.
Here's the schedule:
4 p.m.: Division IV, Bakersfield Christian vs. Modesto-Central Catholic
8 p.m.: Division I, Bakersfield vs. Loomis-Del Oro
The StubHub Center is located off the 405 freeway in Carson. The address is 18400 S. Avalon Blvd.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, children and seniors. Parking is also a $10 fee. One ticket will get you into all games for that day, so you'd be able to see both Bakersfield teams play Friday, but you'd need an additional ticket to see any of the Saturday games, which include the Open Division championship between two of the nation's top teams, Bellflower-St. John Bosco and Concord-De La Salle.
Bakersfield High is selling tickets in advance during school hours from its finance office. Prices are the same, but the school gets to keep a dollar from every ticket it sells in advance. (BCHS might be pre-selling tickets, too, but I haven't confirmed this with the school yet.)
BHS is also organizing rooter buses to go down to Carson on Friday. Contact the school at 661-324-9841 for details.
