The late Vernon Valenzuela was honored with the renaming of Golden State Highway between Q and F streets to Vernon P. Valenzuela Memorial Highway. Valenzuela was a long-time advocate and mentor to veterans.

A ceremony was held Saturday at the Bakersfield Vet Center to dedicate the Vernon P. Valenzuela Memorial Highway in honor of a tireless veterans' advocate.

Golden State Highway from F to Q streets was dedicated to Vernon P. Valenzuela, with family, friends and veterans in attendance. Valenzuela died in March 2012 from cancer.

Signs at each end of the section of highway were purchased with private donations.
