Former Bakersfield College standout Brent Peterson is scheduled to open the season at Single-A Dayton (Ohio), skipping the short-season advanced rookie league stop at Billings (Mont.).

Peterson, a 12th round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds last year, played in the Arizona League after finishing his season at BC.

The 20-year-old infielder, who has played mostly shortstop in his career, is expected to contend for a starting spot at second base at Dayton. He hit .291 with one home run, 15 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 38 games in Arizona last year.

Peterson attended high school at Bakersfield Christian, North and Liberty and played collegiately at Army before transferring to BC.
