The Bakersfield Dragons Squirts hosted the Desert Blaze of Cathedral City Sunday at the
San Joaquin Community Hospital Ice Center. The Dragons won the game 6-3.
The Blaze got on the boards first late in the first period, but the Dragons answered with less than 30 seconds to go on a goal from Tyler Smith.
Matthew Perri gave the Dragons the lead at the start of the second, but the Blaze banked two unanswered goals to once again take the lead. The Dragons tied it up with less than a minute to play when Garrett Campbell scored his first goal as a Squirt.
“I’ve been waiting two seasons for that to happen!” Campbell excitedly explained. “When I was a Mite, I don’t think I scored any goals, and it felt really good to score.”
The third period belonged to the Dragons, as they scored three unanswered goals. Branson Sweaney got the game winner, while Aaron Garza and Perri banked the two insurance goals on a PowerPlay and an empty net, respectively.
The Dragons Squirts play their final road game of the regular season next weekend when they travel to Burbank to take on the California Golden Bears.
