Winning hockey games has been tough for the Condors this season, but when it comes to promotions, the Condors are still among the tops in the league.
The Condors look to break a six-game losing streak on Thursday night against Stockton as they begin a three-game homestand to wrap up the 2012 portion of the season.
As for promotions, it starts on Thursday against the Stockton Thunder with the We’re Not Bankrupt, opps. Scratch that. I mean, Boomtown Bakersfield Night as the Condors celebrate Bakersfield’s wealth (no comment) by giving away cars to the first 100 kids (yes, they are TOY cards) and million-dollar bills to every fan. Though with a picture of Colonel Claw’d’s on the bill it is cleary not legal tender.
But hey, fans will be rich in Claw’d currency.
On Friday night (against Stockton again) the first 2,000 fans 5 and over get voodoo dolls adorned with the names of Bakersfield’s Pacific Division rivals — the Thunder, Ontario Reign, Las Vegas Wranglers and Alaska Aces.
At this stage of the season, who knows, maybe voodoo dolls will turn the tide. Can’t hurt to stick a few needles in them.
And when things aren’t gong well, a jersey change is never a bad idea.
Which brings us to Saturday night and speciality jerseys honoring Olympic wrestling champion Jake Varner.
Varner, a two-time state champion at Bakersfield High before going on to win two NCAA Div. I titles at Iowa, brought home the gold for the U.S. in the men’s 96 kg freestyle competition at the London Olympics.
The jersey depicts a stars and stripes-themed singlet, complete with a gold medal (with Condors logo) and 8-pack abs (why settle for a six pack?).
Varner will be there as well with his gold medal and hanging out in the photo booth to pose for pictures with fans and sign autographs.
After the game the jerseys will be auctioned off to raise funds for League of Dreams. There will also be a special auction featuring a Varner/wrestling jersey of Chris Kushneriuk, who played for the Condors last season and is currently battling testicular cancer.
