Bakersfield College jumped out to an early 28-0 lead on Saturday in the state championship game and never looked back en route to a 35-14 victory over visiting City College of San Francisco.
Playing in front of a spirited crowd of 11,769 fans, Bakersfield's offense clicked early agains the defending state champs. The Renegades scored with 6:13 left in the first quarter on a 9-yard run from Curtis McGregor.
A few plays later, running back Jalen Sykes bolted 42-yards to help the Renegades boost the lead to 14-0 with 2:09 left in the first quarter. In the second quarter, BC got a 14-yard scoring strike from quarterback Brian Burrell to Mike Dunn and a 35-yard fumble return by linebacker John Oglesby for a TD. Those plays helped the Renegades build a 28-0 lead before San Francisco was able to respond.
San Francisco receiver Kyani Harris, who had a brilliant game with 20 receptions, on a 56-yard scoring strike.
In the second half, BC's defense was stifling, giving up one big play score to the Rams. The Renegades sacked Rams quarterback Andrew Spivey five times and held their rushing attack to just 40 yards.
