The South Valley Thunder Soccer Club G97 team traveled to San Diego over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend for the 2012 Nomads Thanksgiving Soccer Tournament. Over a period of three days they defeated North Huntington Beach FC, Roadrunners United FC, Santa Anita SC, and FC Man United to advance to the championship game against Barcelona USA. The match was not lacking for excitement with numerous shots on goal being taken by both teams. At the end of regular play and two overtime periods the match remained scoreless and had to be decided by penalty kicks. The South Valley Thunder goalkeeper saved four of five penalty kicks to secure the victory for the team. This was the fourth championship cup for the Thunder team this year. It was also a great ending for head coach Jeff Darling who stepped down as coach, handing the reins of the team to Jason Carter. Coach Darling had and impressive record of 35-5-10 in league play and 9 tournament titles over the last five seasons. Coach Darling’s devotion, time and energy were committed to helping “his girls” achieve great things on and off the field. Thank you Coach Darling for all you have done.
