Coach Scott Hay talks with the team between periods

The Bakersfield Dragons Squirts beat the Jr. Reign Saturday in Riverside. The score was 4-3.

The Dragons were trailing by one going into the second, but took control of the period starting with a PowerPlay goal by Corbin Heitman, his first of the regular season. Heitman says he took advantage of the rebound off a shot from Branson “Shorty” Sweaney.

“Everybody was bunched up in front of the net,” the first-year Squirt explained. “Shorty shot it, and it came out. It was loose and I just shot it!”

Heitman’s goal was followed by two from Matthew Perri and one from Tyler Smith. The Dragons gave up two more goals in the third, but kept the Jr. Reign from getting the equalizer and ended with the 4-3 win.

The Dragons Squirts are 5-2 in their regular season play. Their next game is against the Pasadena Maple Leafs Sunday at the San Joaquin Community Hospital Ice Center of Bakersfield.
