If the superstition is true that how you ring in the new year has an effect on the 12 months ahead, you'll want to choose your plans for Dec. 31 carefully. Luckily, Bakersfield has plenty of events to choose from if you'd like your 2018 to be full of fun, friends and food.

Adults who want to dress in their NYE best will find lots of options for an upscale night on the town, but there are several more casual options out there too. For kids, there are a few places for up-all-night fun and games. Read on to learn about a party with a Brazilian twist, followed by a rundown of even more events.

Guests can indulge in good food and dancing at Centro 18 Latin Steakhouse's second New Year's Eve festivities, which will include a Brazilian-style dinner followed by a party with live entertainment, a midnight champagne toast and a taco bar.

"They'll have a night to remember," said Frances Cueto, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, chef Lino Gonzalez. "They will be comfortable and fun and safe, in the heart of downtown Bakersfield."

The dinner will include premium-cut meats, which fans of Centro's Sunday Brazilian brunch already know and love. Expect filet mignon, bacon-wrapped chicken, rib-eye, hot links, chicken wings and more.

"The meats keep coming until the customer says 'Stop'!" Cueto said.

For sides, there will be chile verde, enchiladas, pasta and asparagus salad, among others. It will all be served at the table, family-style.

Both the meat and sides are all unlimited for $25, $15 for children 6 to 12 years old and free for those younger.

(If thinking about all that meat has your mouth watering but you can't go on New Year's Eve, be sure to check out Centro 18's weekly brunch, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday. For $30, you get all-you-can-eat meat, plus an omelet bar, sides, dessert, soft drink and bottomless mimosas. For $5 a glass, add a DIY bloody mary bar. This Sunday, a $30 gift card will be given away at each table.)

After dinner, the party starts, with live entertainment by The Press, DJ Eric V & The Baka Boyz as well as the chance to win prizes. Admission to the party is included with the price of dinner, but people can also come for just the nightlife.

Party guests will get champagne just in time for a midnight toast. Around 12:30 a.m., the Centro staff will open up the taco bar, so no guest leaves hungry and has to hit up a drive-through on the way home.

"We did (the taco bar) at midnight last year, and everything happened at midnight," Cueto said, explaining that in the middle of the champagne and celebrations, the taco bar went unnoticed for about 30 minutes. "After everyone hugs and kisses and downs their drink, (we'll do the taco bar)."

This is the second year Centro 18 has held a New Year's Eve event, but this one promises to be bigger and better, Cueto said, adding the dinner and live band so people can spend the whole evening there.

"Last year we just had the DJ," she said. "We still had a pretty good turnout, but people wanted dinner before and we didn't offer it."

As the restaurant has added more nightlife events throughout the last year, the Centro crew knew they needed to up their New Year's Eve game. While last year's event saw about 50 people in attendance, Cueto is hoping for between 60 and 80 this year. Though other parties in town will likely be bigger, Cueto and Centro 18 customers like that the restaurant offers a fun night out without too large (or too drunk) crowds.

"It's nothing too crowded or too crazy," she said. "We want to keep the ambiance nice and comfortable, so everyone who comes can have a great time and not be elbow-to-elbow."

Seating will be limited at the party so that there will be plenty of room to dance, Cueto said, so those who want a table should be sure to call and reserve one early.
