'THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE'

When: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday

Where: Spotlight Theatre, 1622 19th St.

Admission: $18 to $21

Information: 634-0692

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” is on stage this weekend at Spotlight Theatre and Hal Friedman, artistic director, is touting the Sunday matinee as an ideal choice for nonfootball fans.

“Not into Super Bowl?” he asks in an e-mail. “This is a cheap alternative.”

“Millie” is something of a switch itself. The 2002 Broadway production of the musical comedy won a Tony but the show by Richard Morris, Dick Scanlon and Jeanine Tesori was a reincarnation of a Hollywood movie made in 1967. Set in the 1920s, the story is about a girl from Kansas who goes to New York and quickly embraces the flamboyant lifestyle of the jazz era.

Those playing lead roles are Jessica Merritt, Joe Cannon, Abby Bowles Friedman, Kathryn Brinkley Clowes and Alex Neal. Performances continue through Feb. 14.

COLORED PENCIL ART

Jay Rider, a local watercolor artist, hopes to interest others in exploring another medium in which to create artwork, namely, colored pencil.

“Colored pencil art was used mainly in illustrations in the early 1900s but is now an accepted medium in galleries and museums in many parts of the U.S. and elsewhere,” said Rider. It’s a challenging medium to use, he added, because it is transparent and requires good planning, color management, paper knowledge and facility with certain drawing techniques such as perspective and shading.

He is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America and recently took part in the organization’s 16th annual International Juried Exhibition in Seattle.
