It would be nice if those pesky April showers could stay away, but come rain or shine, Barber Honda is sponsoring movies at the Park at River Walk's Brighthouse Networks Amphitheatre on Thursday nights.
Grab your blankets, lawn chairs and favorite movie snacks, then get ready to enjoy the free film each week.
Instead of having movie nights throughout those unbearable summer nights, the typical 12 weeks of movies have been split into spring and fall events.
"Historically, the movie times have been in the summer, but we wanted to switch it up and try different times to see what works best," said Steve Womack, general manager at SMG, the company that books events for the amphitheatre and Rabobank complex.
Womack added that people can bring whatever they want, as long as they are willing to tote it out to the park. So go ahead and pack a picnic basket for a family dinner. Also, feel free to stretch out on your quilted blankets, draped upon the grassy knolls because the view and sound are clear from afar.
Occasionally, a fun feature will accompany the movie such as last week, when Alpha Canine Sanctuary brought puppies for kids to pet to accompany "Marley and Me."
"We try to make it interesting and add something to it," Womack said about jazzing up movies in the park.
Thursday's movie is "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" (7-9:30 p.m.) starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Robin Williams. In this sequel, the central part of the movie is watching chaotic scenes of the famous Smithsonian Institution, brought to life after hours.
On April 8, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,"(7 to 8:30 p.m.) featuring the voices of Bill Hader, Queen Latifah and Denis Leary will keep the little ones entertained. The animated film takes off when character Sid wants a family of his own, so he steals dinosaur eggs that lead him to an underground world of dodging dangerous dino attacks, and he is forced to depend on his friends to save him.
On April 15, "Space Chimps," (7:30 to 9 p.m.) starring the voices of Andy Samberg, Cheryl Hines and Kristin Chenoweth, will send young viewers on a comedic journey into space with funny monkeys who try to make the universe a safer place for both aliens and humans.
On April 22, another animated film "Robots," (7:30 to 9 p.m.) starring the voices of Hollywood actors including Paula Abdul, Halle Berry, and Drew Carey, will hit the screen.
On April 29, the Oscar-winning animated movie, "Up" (7:30 to 9 p.m.) will end the series.
