Musician and educator Joe Craven, who wowed audiences at the Jazz Festival in May at Cal State Bakersfield, is back in town. Well, not in town exactly but he will be in Kern County.

On Saturday evening Craven will be performing in a cooler venue, above the valley floor and at a higher elevation, geographically speaking, in the mountain community of Tehachapi, where he'll be a special guest at a Scottish Music Concert at the BeeKay Theatre.

"It's going to be a rollicking show," said Deborah Hand, cellist, fiddler and owner of Mountain Music in Tehachapi. "We'll probably knock the roof off that place."

Craven, who plays fiddle, mandolin and every kind of percussion instrument imaginable -- an angel food cake pan, for example -- is known for his ability to interact with audiences of all ages.

But in addition to Craven, three other nationally known performers are scheduled to appear: fiddler Jamie Laval, who gave a workshop at Mama Hillybean's restaurant last year, piper Zac Leger and Irish dancer Aria Curzon, who does both hard- and soft-shoe dances.

The concert will be recorded for later use on the program "Folk Scene" on Los Angeles radio station KPFK-90.7 FM, and syndicated nationally, Hand said. All of the performers, plus several local musicians, will be instructors at a three-day music camp that starts at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tehachapi Mountain Park.

Gayle LeRone, jazz singer

Here's a cool idea for a summer evening of entertainment in pleasant surroundings: the summer concert series at Villas at Scenic River, an apartment community in northwest Bakersfield for residents who are 55 or older.

Best of all, the concerts are free and open to the public.

And that includes the pool-side jambalaya buffet, said Julia Turner, property manager.

On tap for this evening's performance is jazz vocalist Gayle LeRone, accompanied at the keyboard by David Mackay. LeRone, an actress, currently is appearing in "Chariot" at the Stella Adler Theater in Hollywood.

Turner said the concerts are the second and fourth Thursdays of the month throughout the summer.

"Obviously," she said, "we want to encourage people to come out and see what we have here. We thought the concerts would be a good way of doing that."

New play at the Empty

"Chatsworth," a new play set in a Los Angeles suburb, opens Friday at The Empty Space.

It's directed by Roger Mathey, who's been keeping a rather low profile since he left his post at the Spotlight Theatre two years ago, although he has appeared on stage at the Mountain Shakespeare Festival at Pine Mountain Club.

The show, according to the theater's Web site, is about a group of dreamers who struggle to stay afloat while waiting for fame and fortune.
