Bakersfield, be warned: This will be no regular taco Tuesday. You can still stuff your face at any taqueria in town but you should also step up your celebrating game. It's Mardi Gras and before we enter a season of repentance (or fear, as tax time nears), it's time to party like you don't have to work the next day.
If you are ready to celebrate Fat Tuesday with some flair, here are a few local events you can check out.
Crab In A Bag (1641 Union Ave.) wants you to indulge to your heart's content. For $37.99 per person, diners can partake of all-you-can-eat snow crab from 4 to 9 p.m. The offer is available with trimmings (sausage, potato and corn) or without, and allows one hour of dining time at the restaurant. Call 527-2229 for more information.
Fat Tuesday Party
This annual all-ages party returns to Buck Owens' Crystal Palace (2800 Buck Owens Blvd.) for another year. Mento Buru will headline the family-friendly gathering that also includes Mardi Gras face painting by Fabulous Faces by Nallely and other surprises. Dinner will be available starting at 5 p.m. and the show runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Call 328-7560 for more information and reservations, which are recommended.
Cheers to Fat Tuesday
Any bar worth its beer salt will find some way to acknowledge Mardi Gras and its call for revelry. A couple of bars, though, have gone a step further.
Tiki-Ko (1919 K St.) will bring a bit of N'awlins downtown by serving up $8 hurricanes from 5:30 to 11 p.m. The tiki bar, known for its drink specials, will also offer a one-night-only king cake cocktail. Just don't swallow the plastic baby.
McMurphy's Irish Pub (14 Monterey St.) will also offer drink specials starting at 7 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by a DJ and the contest for best dressed Mardi Gras style, for which a prize will be offered.
Fat Tuesday Breakfast Dinner
How do you get wild without alcohol? How about serving breakfast for dinner? That's what Emmanuel Lutheran (1900 Baker St.) is doing starting at 6 p.m. The meal will consist of pancakes, sausage, bacon and country potatoes, with the sinfully sweet desserts of brownies and ice cream. Admission is $12 per family or $5 for a single ticket. Call 323-3355 or visit emmanuelbakersfield.org for more information.
If your idea of celebrating is watching a big brawl, do it safely cheering on the professionals for WWE Smackdown. The World Wrestling Entertainment stars will descend on Rabobank Arena (1001 Truxtun Ave.) starting at 4:45 p.m. Expected bouts include a triple-threat match for the WWE Championship between WWE champion AJ Styles, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn; SmackDown women's champion Charlotte Flair, along with Naomi and Becky Lynch, taking on Natalya, Carmella and Lana; and Randy Orton versus the 2018 Royal Rumble Winner Shinsuke Nakamura. (Note: Fight card is subject to change.) Tickets range from $15 to $95 and are available at axs.com, by calling 888-929-7849 or in person at the box office.
