Anybody can go out for happy hour or splash out on a fancy meal (when pay day comes), but next week has a few events that are really worth raising your glass.
Nearing its one-year anniversary, Sonder will host its first Wine Dinner on Thursday. The hip northwest Bakersfield spot is teaming up with Field Recordings Wine out of Paso Robles.
Chef Jorge Diaz, sous chef Zac Cates and the rest of the Sonder culinary team put together a four-course meal, with wine pairings for each dish. (A pouring of 2016 Wonderwall pinot noir will greet guests upon arrival for the reception at 6 p.m. before the dinner at 6:30 p.m.)
The menu consists of:
• Tomato appetizer, featuring a variety such as heirloom, mini heirloom and tomatillo, along with burrata, garlic oil powder, pepper and Maldon salt, tomatillo gatrique and olive soil. Paired with Neverland cabernet sauvignon.
• Baby gem salad with dates, sunchokes, garlic flower, pistachio granola and aged Gouda dressing. Paired with 2017 Fiction chardonnay.
• Porchetta with braised fennel, micro radish and cilantro, citrus apple consomme and pickled grape. Paired with Field Recordings' petite syrah.
• Panna cotta with basil, Foro Amaro, apricot three ways (puree, candied and dehydrated), basil, marigold and pound cake. Paired with 2016 Fiction grenache rose.
Cost is $55; tickets are available at the restaurant, 9500 Brimhall Road, or at eventbrite.com. Call 247-0000 for more information.
Thursday is rife with options for wine lovers, including ALPHA Canine Sanctuary's Fun and Fundraising event at Imbibe Wine and Spirits. The Truxtun Avenue shop again pairs with the local no-kill haven for homeless dogs to support efforts to find loving homes for these pups. The evening will include complimentary wine and pasta as well as a prize drawing.
The fun starts at 5 p.m. at Imbibe 4140 Truxtun Ave. Admission is a $25 donation. Call 391-8212 or visit alphacanines.org for more information.
If wine is not your speed but you are set on celebrating Thirsty Thursday, consider something a bit more potent. The Petroleum Club will host a Tequila Tasting featuring a variety of labels including 1800 Tequila, Don Julio, Cabo Wabo, Volcan and Milagro. There will also be specials on tacos and margaritas, and guests have the option of dining afterward.
The evening starts at 6 p.m. at the club on the 12th floor of Stockdale Tower, 5060 California Ave.
Cost for the tasting is $20, $10 for club members and their guests. Reservations are required by calling 324-6561 or visit thepetroleumclub.com.
