Ghosts and goblins have nothing on the frightening things eating away at your monthly budget. Make that look at the bank statement a bit less scary this month with some Halloween dining deals.

Applebee's has a spooktacular deal, allowing two children to eat for free Sunday through Tuesday (with purchase of an adult entree). Diners should print out the ad from the local Applebee's Facebook page, which is good for two kids meals with purchase.

Kids 12 and under in costume eat free at Temblor Brewing Co. A child can receive a free item from the kids menu with each purchase of an adult entree.

Young Halloween revelers also eat free tacos at Brooklyn's BBQ as long as they're in costume.

IHOP is dishing up free orders of scary face pancakes for children 12 and under all day Monday. Kids can decorate their meal with whipped cream, a strawberry nose, Oreos and candy corn.

At Dickey's Barbecue Pit, kids in costume eat free with a $10 adult purchase.

Costumed folks can get a free doughnut at Krispy Kreme while supplies last.

Roll up to Chipotle in costume and get a burrito, bowl, salad or order of tacos for $3. The deal is good from 3 p.m. to close Tuesday.

Papa Murphy's Take N' Bake has its a Jack-O Lantern pizza, rolled in the shape of a pumpkin, with a smiling Jack-O-Lantern face of pepperoni with olives as eyes for $8. And through Wednesday, customers can also take part in a social media photo contest by posting a spooky selfie with their Jack-O-Lantern pizza with the hashtag #JackoSelfie on Twitter and Instagram, or uploading a spooky selfie directly to Papa Murphy’s Facebook page. Five lucky winners will land a gift card for pizza.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse is still offering its pizookie dessert for just $3 through Tuesday.

Sonic is serving up 50-cent corndogs all day Tuesday.

A special rather than a deal, Creamistry is offering its charcoal cookies and scream ice cream through Tuesday. Customers can make it extra spooky ordering it in a midnight black waffle cone or bowl.

Another spooky option is at Starbucks, which is serving a zombie frappuccino, which is blended with a new green caramel apple powder and pink powder, then topped off with pink whipped cream and a mocha drizzle. The true scare may come later when you visit the dentist and count those cavities.

If you're lucky enough to be in Pasadena for the holiday, head to Blaze Pizza's flagship test kitchen for an extra spooky charcoal lemonade and charcoal agua fresca. The charcoal is just for color, and doesn't affect the flavor (the agua fresca flavor is blueberry hibiscus). Closer to home, Eureka! has a charcoal lemonade if you want a darker drink.

Local fundraisers

Something that shouldn't be scary is supporting a good cause. Hard-working nonprofits are aiming at diners' hunger with needs of their own.

Eating is a selfless act on Thursday at Chipotle. Dine at any location between 10:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. to support Habitat for Humanity, which assists low-income community members with building a home or preserving an existing one. Pull up the flier on the Habitat for Humanity Golden Empire Facebook page to help 50 percent of your purchase aid local Habitat affiliates.

Also on Thursday, ALPHA Canine Sanctuary will host an event at Original Roadhouse Grill, 8490 Rosedale Highway. With their flier on the group's Facebook page, customers from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. can donate 20 percent of their ticket to the rescue organization. Funds raised, including an opportunity drawing, will assist with adoptions, rescue, care and spay/neuter assistance for low-income community members.

New and different

Wienerschnitzel is ready for the rush for tamales this holiday season. Starting Monday and running through the end of the year, the top hot dog chain will serve shredded beef tamales its way — topped with cheese and its famous chili. Along with that "classic" option, diners can also enjoy tamales with the additional toppings of Hatch green chilies or guacamole and jalapenos. ... Rice-A-Roni is trying to appeal to those craving Chipotle but dining at home with its new cilantro lime variety.
