Whatever the cause, Bakersfield businesses are creative about finding ways to help out. Here are the latest do-gooding spots to support this month.
Salty’s BBQ & Catering will celebrate its fifth anniversary Sunday with a fundraiser to support the family of Jack Beaton, who was killed earlier this week in the mass shooting in Las Vegas. Jack Beaton’s son, Jake Beaton, is an employee of Salty’s BBQ.
Ten percent of its sales Sunday (from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) will go to the Beaton family, as will all tips collected that day. That extends to both locations, 9425 Rosedale Highway and 6801 White Lane.
Jack Beaton died from injuries sustained while heroically shielding his wife from gunfire during the horrific mass shooting in Las Vegas on Oct. 1.
Cloud 9 Coffee Co. is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month offering free coffee to breast cancer survivors through October. Those who bring in proof of a mammogram can receive $1 off your coffee. For each of those sold, the business will donate $1 to Links For Life, which provides mammograms, biopsies, support groups and other resources to local women battling breast cancer. Owner Morgan Burnard said in a Facebook post that she was inspired to support the fight because her mother is a recent survivor. The coffee truck parks at Stockdale Towers, 5060 California Ave.
Black Angus Steakhouse (3601 Rosedale Highway) is also supporting the fight against breast cancer. For every bottle of Chloe Rosé purchased throughout the month of October, the chain will donate $2 to the nonprofit Breast Cancer Charities of America. (The Chloe 2016 Central Coast Rosé is a pinot noir-based blend with delicate notes of fresh berries and watermelon.)
Tiki-Ko is using its weekly specials to give back as well. For the sale of each of its three limited-time cocktails using Don Q rums, it will donate $2 to Direct Relief, a humanitarian aid organization currently assisting with hurricane relief in Puerto Rico. The specials are available through Sunday.
The tasty trio is: Añejo rum fashioned ($10), Don Q Añejo and Gran Añejo stirred with cane syrup and Bitterman's Tiki Bitters; coconut mojito ($9) with Don Q Coco Rum, muddled mint, fresh lime juice and house-made simple syrup; and the Salty Sailor ($9) with Don Q Cristal Rum, grapefruit juice, fresh lime, house-made simple syrup and Bitterman's Hellfire Shrub, served with a salted rim.
Do you know of any other restaurants or beverage spots that are giving back? Send the details to firstname.lastname@example.org.

New and different
The gobbler is back at Sequoia Sandwich Co. Dubbed "Thanksgiving on a roll," the sandwich ($8.95) is stacked with thick-sliced roasted turkey topped with turkey gravy and homemade stuffing on a grilled French roll, with cranberry sauce served on the side. The sandwich chain has also added seasonal slices of pumpkin pie to its cold case. ... The Habit Burger rolled out a trio of bourbon-basted treats: a bourbon bacon charburger ($4.65) and bourbon bacon golden chicken sandwich ($6.99), both topped with crispy bacon and tangy bourbon glaze on a toasted bun with lettuce, mayo, tomatoes and pickles; and bourbon barbecue-spiced fries ($2.50). ... Speaking of burgers, Red Robin has a couple new options. The chimi fresco finest burger is a half-pound Black Angus patty with seared queso fresco, a chimichurri vinaigrette and aioli, lettuce, tomatoes and house-pickled, red onions on a telera bun. The new taco tavern double features two fire-grilled beef patties, melted pepper jack cheese, crispy tortilla strips, fresh guacamole, zesty salsa and shredded lettuce on a sesame seed bun. The chain also added honey dijon wings and a sweet treats trio, a sharable platter with a Oreo crumble sundae, d'oh! rings and chocolate fruffles, served with caramel for dipping. The new items are available through December.
