Bakersfield College is not the only group venturing into the dark forest. It's a wish come true for local theatergoers that Bakersfield Youth Fine Arts Academy and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County also debuts its production of "Into the Woods" this weekend.
A cast of 30 performers, ranging in age from 5 to 17, has been hard at work during the summer workshop, featuring dance, voice and acting lessons, at the Boys & Girls Clubs' Armstrong Youth Center to bring the fairy-tale adventure to life.
Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at Bakersfield City School District’s Education Center, 1300 Baker St. Admission is $10, with proceeds going to benefit future collaborative theater productions and youth participants.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County currently works with 10 school districts in neighboring towns to operate 62 separate locations to serve 7,200 children on a daily basis. The club works specifically with local community leadership and hires and trains youth development professionals from that community to operate the clubs. The Bakersfield Youth Fine Arts Academy is a recently formed group of directors, instructors and choreographers dedicated to cultivating the talents, hopes and dreams of young local performers.
The academy also has upcoming shows "The Wizard of Oz" second workshop (July 14 and 15) and Disney’s "The Lion King Jr." (Aug. 11 and 12). Learn more at bgclubsofkerncounty.org.
