Kellie grew up on the East Coast, and received a journalism and international studies degree from the University of Richmond, Virginia. She also studied in Argentina, and interned with the Buenos Aires Herald, a daily English newspaper.
In 2000, Kellie headed west for a copy editing position at the San Jose Mercury News in Northern California. After two years, she transitioned to reporting, covering city government, crime, education and other breaking news. In 2005, she moved south as the L.A. correspondent for The Recorder, a legal newspaper.
Kellie spent two years reporting from China, where she was a regular contributor for the CNN travel and lifestyle Web site CNNgo.com. While in China, Kellie also was a restaurant reviewer for City Weekend Shanghai and edited the 125-page Shanghai Business Dining Guide.
During her time in Asia, she drank fermented mare's milk in a Mongolian yurt, attended a mail-order bride¹s wedding, donned qipaos with Shanghai¹s senior citizens and traveled to the most polluted city in the world.
Kellie moved to Bakersfield and joined the Californian in 2011.
