Jamie Butow has been a journalist since discovering her love of media in junior high. She pestered her way on to her high school newspaper staff where she was (ironically) promoted to editor in chief her senior year. She went on to study journalism at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, and earn a journalism degree from San Diego State University. While at SDSU she also participated on the speech and debate teams and served as editor in chief of the award-winning daily student-run newspaper, The Daily Aztec.
Thrown from academia, Jamie made her way to the Central Valley, landing her first job as a copy editor for the Visalia Times-Delta. During the next 11 years she served in a variety of roles including sports editor, assistant managing editor of presentation and magazine editor. She was the news editor when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks occurred, and the organization's first online editor waaaaay back when the web was considered just a passing fad. In 2009 she moved into the role of local news editor, overseeing the daily news flow for both print and online. During her time with the Gannett-owned paper, she earned several awards including being named one of the company's Outstanding Supervisors in 2003.
In December 2009, Jamie traded cows for carrots and joined the staff of the Bakersfield Californian. When she's not wrangling online blogs and comments on Bakersfield.com, BakersfieldTalks.com or BakersfieldMom.com, she is raising her young son, planning activities wih the Cub Scouts, inevitably playing fetch with her dogs, working on completing her master's degree, and wishing she had time to run a fourth marathon.
