Jorge Barrientos has come full circle, so to speak. He moved from Orange County to Bakersfield when he was in elementary school, attending McKee Elementary in Greenfield. Then came Ollivier Junior High and Ridgeview High schools, where he was involved in journalism all four years. After graduating, he attended Chico State. There he was a news reporter and news editor for the nation’s top weekly college paper and news website, The Orion.
After graduating with a journalism degree (minor in music), he interned at The Orange County Register through the Chips Quinn Scholars program. During the internship, he was offered a full time position and covered education in Irvine and Tustin. He later became city reporter for Seal Beach, Los Alamitos and Rossmoor.
But alas, like many young Bako residents who leave and vow never to return, he was sucked back to Kern County. In 2008, he worked on the breaking news team at The Bakersfield Californian, and in 2009, he became its education reporter. In 2009, he also worked as a substitute teacher in Greenfield Union School District and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
When he’s not working, you can find Jorge hanging out with his wife — a local teacher — traveling the globe, and having a good time around town — chillin' with childhood friends and making new ones.
