College sports reporter
Jeff Evans presently covers Cal State Bakersfield and Bakersfield College, and fills in when needed in other areas such as preps, Blaze, boxing, and miscellaneous local sporting events. Has covered the CIF Central Section high school basketball championship games in Fresno yearly since 2007.
Jeff been on the sports staff at The Californian since 1980, covering preps for five years and mainly covering colleges from 1986-present, with a few years sprinkled in when he covered the Blaze/Dodgers, Blitz and was a general assignment sports reporter.
He was born in Oakland and lived in the Bay Area until third grade. He’s lived in the San Joaquin Valley since 1965, in the cities of Fresno, Hanford, Arvin and Tulare in addition to Bakersfield. He lived and worked for three summers during college years in the Calaveras County mountain town of Arnold.
Jeff covered sports and city government at the Tulare Advance-Register from 1978-80 and covered education and police at the Clovis Independent from 1977-78. He even covered Arvin High sports for the Lamont Ledger while a student at Arvin High in the early 1970s.
Jeff graduated from Hoover High School in Fresno and Fresno State University with a degree in journalism. He also attended Hanford and Arvin high schools.
Jeff is married with two grown children and five grandchildren. He enjoys skiing and baseball, with extra emphasis on the San Francisco Giants. He’s also an avid fantasy baseball and football participant and enjoys spending time in the mountains, particularly Yosemite.
He has been active at church in the past and is presently a member of the board of directors of the Bob Elias Kern County Sports Hall of Fame.
