Steven Mayer has been a staff writer at The Californian since March 1997. He covered agriculture and water issues before moving to the K-8 education beat in late 1998. Mayer worked as acting assistant features editor in 2002, and in recent years he has covered the Real People beat, a regular feature that highlights the stories of everyday residents of Kern County.

A Bakersfield native, Mayer became a journalist in mid-life after returning to school to earn a degree in English. Before that he worked as a musician, a purveyor of fine wines, a middle manager, and a couple of jobs he'd just as soon not mention here.

He and his wife, Brenda, a sixth-grade teacher, have two sons, a Labrador retriever and a mortgage that could be featured in a B-grade Japanese monster movie.
