Careers at The Bakersfield Californian

Company Profile

The Bakersfield Californian is an award winning, independent, family-owned newspaper. Our roots date back to 1866 and has been under the same family ownership since 1897. Our Chairman, Publisher and President, Ginger Moorhouse is the great-granddaughter of Alfred Harrell who purchased the paper in 1897. Mr. Harrell spent nearly 50 years in the newspaper business an in 1969 became the 24th person to be named to the Newspaper Hall of Fame.

We feature state-of-the-art technology and have received state and national awards for news coverage, feature stories and design. Our print product underwent a comprehensive redesign in March 2006, receiving industry recognition for innovation and structure.

Our main offices are located in a historic landmark building in downtown Bakersfield. Our lobby has been remodeled to capture the craftsman design of the original structure built in 1926. In 2005 the Newsroom underwent a complete remodel with unique working areas, meeting areas and a studio allowing journalists to report live alongside on air reporters with local television media partner. Our production facility, the Harrell-Fritts Publishing Center, located just north of the city near the airport, houses our printing press, and production, technical, packaging, fleet and the circulation and customer services departments. When this facility was built in 1984, The Bakersfield Californian became one of the most technically advanced newspaper companies in the United States. The publishing center features an offset press built by TKS. In 2004 the tradition of our dedication to investing in state-of-the-art technology continued with the addition of an 18-station inserting/packaging equipment by Ferag.

Our employees have received numerous awards and recognition from Editor & Publisher, Presstime, CNPA, and other industry organizations. In 2004, our publisher, Ginger Moorhouse was named Publisher of the Year by Editor & Publisher.
