In Spanish, it means hook. In a darkened, candle-lit Nile Bar & Grill, you could learn that tasty bit of the Argentinian art of seduction.
The downtown club will offer tango every Wednesday from 6 to 10 p.m. starting tonight. Dinner and an approximately hourlong lesson are included in the $20 charge.
Tango nights are popular in Santa Barbara, said Nile manager Frank Kruz, so the club figured it might do well here.
An orchestra from Los Angeles will provide the music.
“They barely speak English, they’re dressed up like they’re getting married that day,” Kruz said. “They’re professional guys. It’s almost like going into an old Italian restaurant.”
Now and then the club might mix it up with a mariachi group or salsa, Kruz said.
It’s part of the Nile’s move toward a House of Blues dinner club atmosphere, Kruz said, with a variety of acts each week: jazz on Tuesdays, tango Wednesdays, comedy on Thursdays and hip-hop music on the weekends.
