The band has performed fall and spring concerts at the gallery for the past two years.
Trumpeter Kris Tiner, a Bakersfield College jazz instructor, has been with Industrial Jazz Group for five years.
The group’s composer, Andrew Durkin, is influenced by Frank Zappa, pop music, old doo-wop tunes, ’60s rock and surf music, even selections from spy soundtracks, Tiner said.
“So it’s a collage of different styles,” he added. “It’s really fun music, a great sense of humor about it.”
Nakatani, Thursday’s guest, uses a custom-designed jazz drum kit, but with a twist. He uses contemporary techniques on a gong and various Japanese instruments. The effect of his metallic sounds is “ethereal,” Tiner said.
