By some estimates, the region has witnessed the deaths of close to half a million people and the displacement of more than 2 million refugees during that time. Concerned Bakersfield locals want to help.
Aligned with the “Tents of Hope” Project, in which refugee tents are painted with messages of hope and compassion, First Congregational Church of Bakersfield will hold “Ode to Africa” on Saturday, a daylong educational fundraiser for humanitarian aid for the people of Darfur.
Besides the painting of one tent that will join others from around the country in a display at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., next summer, the event will feature:
• A “fair trade” bazaar;
• Drumming and dancing performances;
• Food;
• The Omnipresent Puppet Theater’s presentation of “A Tale of Two Sisters: An African Cinderella Story”; and
• An 11 a.m. book discussion of the New York Times best-seller “A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier” by Ishmael Beah.
