Jorge Barrientos has come full circle, so to speak. He moved from Orange County to Bakersfield when he was in elementary school, attending McKee Elementary in Greenfield. Then came Ollivier Junior High and Ridgeview High schools, where he was involved in journalism all four years.
Read more of this bioAbout 300 Kern County students will use their drama and speech skills in competition at the 41st annual Kern County Oral Language Festival, from 8 a.m.-1:15 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Norris Middle School, 6940 Calloway Drive.
Students in grades 4-8, representing approximately 60 public and private schools, will present serious and humorous interpretations solo and in pairs and perform as verse choirs in groups of up to eight students.
The festival will be held in two sessions. Students in grades 4-6 will perform from 8-10:15 a.m., and grades 7-8 will perform from 11 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Participants will be judged on content, delivery, total impression and adherence to rules.
Trophies will be awarded to first through third place finishers in the rooms in which they performed. First place winners will give an encore performance during the awards ceremonies held at 10:15 a.m. for grades 4-6 and 1:15 p.m. for grades 7-8.
The event is sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office with logistical support from the Norris School District.
