Headed for the home stretch: Updating the league races

Images

update.jpg

UPDATED, (Sunday): I've updated the standings below with a few late results from Friday night and a helpful email from South athletic director Guillermo Alvarado, who is keeping the official soccer standings for the SWYL, SEYL and SYL.

ORIGINAL POST: I'm going to do you a favor tonight.

After tonight's action, there are two weeks left in the basketball regular season and a week left in soccer. It can be difficult to keep track of all four sports (counting boys and girls) in four different local leagues, so I've done my best to track down the results from each league and come up with some standings.

Some are very accurate and up to date and will prepare you for the fortnight ahead. Others are sketchy and I don't have much information at all. I've also left out wrestling because those races won't be completely decided until next weekend's league championships.

And early congratulations to Ridgeview girls soccer and Garces girls soccer; those are the first winter-sports teams to clinch league titles (Ridgeview has clinched it outright; Garces just a tie for now).

BOYS BASKETBALL
Southwest Yosemite League
Liberty 6-0
Bakersfield 4-2
Independence 3-3
Stockdale 3-3
Frontier 2-4
Centennial 0-6
Note: The Patriots keep finding ways to win close games, including a buzzer-beater against BHS. If Liberty can win its next three, it'll clinch the outright title before it has to mess with the Drillers again.
Big games ahead: Fron @ Bak, Wednesday; Lib @ Stock, Wednesday; Indy @ Lib, Friday; Lib @ Bak, Feb. 17

Southeast Yosemite League
East 4-0
Garces 3-2
Highland 3-2
North 2-3
Foothill 0-5
Note: A big second-half comeback at Gaces has given East complete control of this race. The Blades have won 10 in a row overall.
Big games ahead: East @ High, Feb. 14; Garc @ East, Feb. 16

South Yosemite League
Ridgeview 4-0
West 4-0
South 2-2
Mira Monte 1-4
Golden Valley 0-5
Note: Here's where things get a bit sketchy: I haven't been able to track down the result of the first Ridgeview-West league game, so either team could be up. Anyway, the return engagement is Thursday at West.
Big game ahead: RV @ West, Thursday

South Sequoia League
Tehachapi 6-0
Shafter 5-1
Bak. Christian 4-2
Taft 2-4
Wasco 1-5
Arvin 0-6
Note: Football star Cory Lange leads the explosive Warriors; he has scored 45, 48 and 28 points in the past three games. Shafter might be the surprise of the county.
Big games ahead: Tehach @ Shaf, Friday; Shaf @ BCHS, Feb. 14; Tehach @ BCHS, Feb. 17

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Southwest Yosemite League
Stockdale 6-0
Independence 5-1
Centennial 3-3
Liberty 3-3
Bakersfield 2-4
Frontier 0-6
Note: In the first meeting of the league's clear two best teams, Independence led by a deuce at halftime but Stockdale ran away and hid in the second half. Centennial tested Stockdale in the opener but has been somewhat disappointing since.
Big games ahead: Indy @ Cent, Wednesday; Stock @ Lib, Wednesday; Stock @ Indy, Feb. 17

Southeast Yosemite League
Garces 4-1
North 4-1
Foothill 3-2
East and Highland unknown (combined 1-8)
Note: After North surprised suddenly short-handed Garces in the league opener, the Rams turned around and won at the Stars' house on Thursday to even things up. Good chance this one ends with a co-title.
Big games ahead: Garc @ Foot, Feb. 14; Foot @ North, Feb. 16

South Yosemite League
Ridgeview 5-0
Mira Monte 2-2
Golden Valley 2-3
West 2-3
South 1-4
Note: As expected, it's the Erica McCall show. Wolf Pack coach Michael Martin called in Ridgeview's latest result and actually felt the need to explain why his star junior didn't have a triple-double.
Big games ahead: Take any chance you can get to watch McCall.

South Sequoia League
Shafter 6-0
Tehachapi 5-1
Taft 3-3
Arvin 3-3
Wasco 1-5
Bak. Christian 0-6
Note: Hannah Ramirez has been tremendous for the Generals, who beat Tehachapi by 14 on the road.
Big game ahead: Tehach @ Shaf, Friday

BOYS SOCCER
Southwest Yosemite League

Independence 6-2-0 (18 pts)
Bakersfield 5-1-2 (17)
Liberty 5-1-2 (17)
Centennial 4-4-0 (12)
Frontier 1-7-0 (3)
Stockdale 1-7-0 (3)
Note: The big result here was Independence's 4-1 stunner at Bakersfield tonight. It vaults the Falcons into first place, but there's plenty of soccer to be played, including the Falcons' visit to Liberty.
Big games ahead: Cent @ Indy, Wednesday; Indy @ Lib, Friday; Bak @ Cent, Friday

Southeast Yosemite League
Foothill 5-2-0 (15 pts)
North 4-1-1 (13)
East 3-1-2 (11)
Highland 2-3-1 (7)
Garces 0-7-0 (0)
Note: Note that Foothill has played one more game than either North or East, so this one is really close.
Big games ahead: Foot @ East, Wednesday, East @ North, Thursday

South Yosemite League
West 4-1-1 (13 pts)
Golden Valley 3-1-2 (11)
Ridgeview 3-3-1 (10)
Mira Monte 2-3-2 (8)
South 0-4-2 (2)
Note: It's safe to say the rematch between West and Golden Valley will loom large.
Big game ahead: West @ GV, Wednesday; Ridgeview at West, Thursday

South Sequoia League
Wasco 6-0-1 (19 pts)
Rest of league unknown
Note: Too many missing results to confirm any meaningful records except Wasco's sterling mark.

GIRLS SOCCER
Southwest Yosemite League

Liberty 7-0-1 (22 pts)
Stockdale 7-1-0 (21)
Bakersfield 4-4-0 (12)
Frontier 1-5-2 (5)
Centennial 1-5-2 (5)
Independence 1-6-1 (4)
Note: It'll come down to a huge Wednesday tilt at Liberty. The Patriots won the first meeting 2-0 and probably need only a tie in this one.
Big game ahead: Stock @ Lib, Wednesday

Southeast Yosemite League
Garces 7-0-0 (21 pts)
Highland 5-1-0 (15)
East 2-4-0 (6)
North 1-5-0 (3)
Foothill 1-6-0 (3)
Note: Highland still has a chance to tie here if it wins twice next week. Of course, that would mean reversing a 6-1 loss to Garces at home.
Big game ahead: High @ Garc, Thursday

South Yosemite League
Ridgeview 6-1-0 (18 pts)
South 3-3-0 (9)
Golden Valley 3-3-0 (9)
Mira Monte 3-4-0 (9)
West 1-5-0 (3)
Note: The Wolf Pack sewed this up with a 1-0 victory at Golden Valley on Thursday.

South Sequoia League
Bak. Christian 7-0-1 (21 pts)
Tehachapi 5-1-1 (16)
Wasco 4-3-0 (12)
Arvin 2-5-0 (6)
Taft 2-6-0 (6)
Shafter 1-6-0 (3)
Note: Important to note that most Friday results weren't called in, so Tehachapi and Wasco could add to those point totals. Still, BCHS has control, especially since the Eagles already beat Tehachapi at home and tied on the road.
Big game ahead: Wasc @ BCHS, Tuesday
