Man surrenders to police after holding out in apartment

A wanted man surrendered to police Thursday night after refusing to come out of an apartment.

Bakersfield police were called to the 500 block of H Street at about 4:23 p.m. for a report of a wanted parolee-at-large inside an apartment, according to a Bakersfield Police Department news release.

Inside the apartment was Joshua Pearce, 29, of Bakersfield, who police said had an outstanding arrest warrant for parole violation.

Pearce was contacted by phone but refused to surrender, the news release said. He had several phone conversations with officers, friends and relatives during the next several hours.

At about 7:48 p.m., after another phone conversation with a family member, Pearce left the apartment and surrendered to California State Parole agents without incident, police said.

He was taken into the Kern County Jail for parole violation.

The news release said several apartments in the small complex were evacuated for about two hours, but residents were allowed to return to their homes.

No injures were reported, according to the news release.
